Alphabet Soup of Behavior Therapy

Good reminder on the alphabet soup of behavior therapy!

Lets play 6 degrees of Behavior therapy

Many therapists coupled behaviour therapy (think Early Greek stoic Epictitus and Dr Skinner) with the cognitive therapy of Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis, to form cognitive behavioural therapy

Lets not forget another great mind that had some involvement in early days of SMART: psychiatrist Dr. Maxie C. Maultsby, Jr. who came up with RBT.. Rational Behavior Therapy:
A great read of a classic post by Dr Maulstby on SROL: Scientific Shoulds

..which lead to REBT by Dr Ellis!

6 ~yes at LEAST 6 forms of Behavioral Therapy:

BT: Behavioral therapy is an umbrella term for types of therapy that treat mental health disorders. This form of therapy seeks to identify and help change potentially self-destructive or unhealthy behaviors.
Behaviour therapy breaks down into four disciplines: applied behaviour analysis (ABA), the teaching-family model (TFM), positive behavior support (PBS) and cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). ABA focuses on the application of learning theory to assess potential behaviour-change procedures and CBT focuses on the thoughts and feelings behind mental health conditions with treatment plans in psychotherapy to lessen the issue.

CBT: Cognitive behavioral therapy is that our thoughts, feelings, and behavior are all inter connected and our thoughts can influence our behavior and emotions in a negative manner.

RBT: Rational Behavior Therapy: based on the belief of discovering an unsuspected problem which creates unwanted mental, emotional and physical behaviors.

REBT: The key idea is that people have irrational assumptions that lead to psychological distress.

DBT: Dialectical behavior therapy is a therapy designed to help people suffering from mood disorders as well as those who need to change patterns of behavior that are not helpful, such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse.

ACT: Acceptance and commitment therapy uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies mixed in different ways with commitment and behavior-change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility. The approach was originally called comprehensive distancing.

Added since last!
EMDR: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing ~ reduce the long-lasting effects of distressing memories by engaging the brain’s natural adaptive information processing mechanisms, thereby relieving present symptoms. The therapy uses an eight-phase approach that includes having the patient recall distressing images while receiving one of several types of bilateral sensory input, such as side to side eye movements.[6] EMDR was originally developed to treat adults with PTSD

Wow! Still reading? I’m impressed ~ and YES.. I am retentive, compulsive and a research junky with too much free time and stubbornly wants to KNOW about what I am trusting my life with!

I love the sandbox and will check back more often.
We can all play nice as we have the same ultimate goal of being happy and healthy. I have been invited to a small AA women’s meeting at someone’s home and love the company of these ladies.
I believe in the power of mother nature and that works for everyone!
